I then have the option to reconect and it starts downloading an update which is stuck on 100%.

can you do the game diagnostic, from options at the top of a lobby? which game are you playing and do you have the cd or steam version? [steam version needs this patch: [You must login to view link]]
does the game run ok completely off of voobly?
