I'm thinking that we say the following:
Milestone badges
Getting to 1800/1900/2000 in Tournaments will entitle you to a special badge They will be bronze/silver/gold. Each new milestone would replace the previous badge.
Special Events
We can take the top 16/32 of the ladder and invite them to a special event.
This I'm not sure on but it could be something like the following.
Randomised Teams. This would have everyone sign up individually and be randomised into squads of 4.
Each squads would have to play the others in a 1v1, 2v2 and 4v4. So the team can decide who plays who and what in the 1v1 and 2v2s but all members play the 4v4. This is pretty complex for CS players so it makes sense we target the elite.
In general I support that idea but imo there are a few better solutions:
1) Make badges "expire" after some time similar to how Match links are only stored 256 days. Right now when I see profiles like ForgiveMe or Like_Gg those (old) badges are just a showoff of how much they have won already and dont really represent any skill anymore. If badges were only visible on your profiles for like 1 or 2 years, that would already help reducing the flood of badges. You could still have an additional tab which you have to click to show older badges (I think that has been suggested somewhere before).
2) Make a fixed amount of badges such as CBA 1v1, CBA 2v2, CBA 3v3, Smosh 1v1, Smosh 2v2, Veterans Blood and so on. When one of those tourneys gets hosted again, the badges move to the new winners (a challenge cup more or less). That way people who already have the badges have a very good reason to play in the tourneys to defend their title and keep the badges.
The reason why Im writing this is that plenty of people been complaining that tourneys dont have badges anymore and that they dont play in them because of that. Getting points in a ladder for which the prizes havent even been announced afaik is just not motivating enough for many to participate.
Since the tournament ladder system is still new and I doubt that you want to get rid of it already, I suggest the following:
1. Make the badges expire. Keep them in the profiles for 2 years, after that they automatically move into an "older badge tab" or something. That will already reduce the amount of visible badges in many profiles.
2. Only one badge per month. Let there be 4 tourneys a month, 3 of them will have points in the tourney ladder as prize, 1 tourney per month gets badges as prizes. That way we can have 1 big tourney and 3 smaller tourneys each month. And 24 tourneys with visible badges on the profiles really isnt that much.
Also, if the 1800/1900/2000 milestone badges are the prizes for the tourney ladder, then announce it already. Right now people think they only get stupid points.
I wanted to do a championsip badge for one of my older initiatives but when the format had no interest I didn't even follow it up.
